The Story
The Baskerville family is cursed. For generations, a story has persisted about a giant, fiery hound that stalks the moors, waiting to claim the lives of the Baskerville heirs. When the latest lord, Sir Charles, is found dead on the grounds of his estate with a look of terror frozen on his face, the legend feels frighteningly real. His friend and doctor, James Mortimer, fears for the new heir, Sir Henry, and turns to the only man who can help: Sherlock Holmes.
Holmes sends his trusted friend, Dr. Watson, to Baskerville Hall with Sir Henry to observe and protect. On the lonely, fog-shrouded Dartmoor, Watson encounters a cast of suspicious characters, hears a prisoner's howl from a nearby prison, and sees strange lights on the moor at night. All the while, he feels the oppressive weight of the legend and the very real danger closing in. It's up to Holmes to arrive and piece together the human greed and deception hiding behind the ghost story before the hound strikes again.
Why You Should Read It
This book is where Arthur Conan Doyle perfected the balance between rational detective work and spine-tingling Gothic horror. Holmes is at his sharpest, but it's Watson who carries much of the story, and seeing the mystery through his brave, often bewildered eyes makes the suspense incredibly personal. The setting is the star here—the desolate moors, the creeping fog, and the isolated hall create a mood so thick you can almost feel the damp chill. It makes you question what's real alongside the characters.
Final Verdict
This is the perfect book for anyone who loves a classic mystery with a heavy dose of atmosphere. If you're new to Sherlock Holmes, this is a fantastic place to start. If you're a longtime fan, it's a joy to revisit the duo's most iconic adventure. It's for readers who want to be genuinely creeped out one moment and marvel at brilliant deduction the next. A timeless, absolutely gripping tale.
